Meeting Minutes

Club Minutes from June 12th, 2014
Pikes Peak Water Garden Society
June Club Member Meeting

There were 38 members present.

The June meeting was held at Mountain View Church of Christ in Colorado Springs CO.

Dick Throckmorton called the meeting to order at 7:15PM.

Dick asked if we had any guests, which there were none, and asked for a show of hands based on membership numbers. Jock and Hope Schwank had the lowest membership number at 48.

Cheri presented the Treasurers Report. We have $2209.21 in checking and $2618.57 in savings for total club funds of $4827.78. She also noted that we made a profit of $1982.76 at the plant sale.

Bev Kratzer thanked everyone who had helped work the plant sale and she received applause for coordinating it.

Dick then covered upcoming events.

Next month will be the Koi auction. We plan to get less but better Koi for the auction.

Tom Taylor and Bob Oatman then discussed the pond tour which is at the end of July. We previously had 5 exhibitors signed up and had an additional person sign up tonight. That makes 6 people signed up so far. We would like to get 10 to 12 total.

The August meeting will cover a history of the PPWGS along with a discussion on Koi Health.

Dick introduced Tina Travis, an Environmental Technician for El Paso County. Tina led a interesting discussion on Aquatic Invasives, and gave out a pamphlet describing Noxious weeds in El Paso County. She discussed several plants that are listed as or may soon be listed as noxious, and how to remove them. It turns out that many of the plants we enjoy in our ponds are actually very invasive and poisonous. Some of the invasive plants she discussed included Hyacinths, Water Lettuce and Yellow Iris. Although these plants are not presently on El Paso’s Noxious Weeds list, they may be soon. There were many questions from the audience about controlling a variety of plants and how to dispose of them. Tina also described the process of what happens if the county finds noxious weeds on your property. Jean Susemihl brought in a Myrtle Spurge that she had collected from her property. This is a very dangerous plant and could kill your fish even if rainwater simply runs off the plant and into the pond.

Tom Taylor noted that if you throw cardboard over your lilies before a hail storm the pads won’t be damaged.

Lauren Yukawa mentioned that he is moving, and that he will be placing his Koi up for auction this Saturday at the Southern Colorado Koi Clubs Koi Rehoming Auction. This auction will be held at Phelan Gardens. Viewing begins at 10:00am and the auction begins at noon. Members of PPWGS are welcome to bring their Koi to be included in the auction.

Door prizes were given out as follows;
Tony D’Amico – Koi Certificate, Ken Rozema – Wind Chime, Lynn Rozema – Snail Sculpture, Karen Seder – Rabbit Sculpture, Cathy Hula – Ceramic Pot, Brigitte Bealmer – Koi Certificate, Mike Davis – Koi Certificate.

Meeting Adjourned at 8:50PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Oatman
