Meeting Minutes

Club Minutes from April 3rd, 2014
Pikes Peak Water Garden Society
April Club Member Meeting
There were 23 members present.

The April meeting was held at Mountain View Church of Christ in Colorado Springs CO.

Before the actual club meeting began, Tom Taylor offered a mini class on water testing at 6:30. Members bought in samples of their own pond water to learn why and how testing should be done.

Dick Throckmorton called the meeting to order at 7:15PM.
Cheri then introduced a new member.

Dick introduced the Members of the Board and Event Coordinators.

Bob Oatman discussed the plans for the Union Printers Pond Workshop which is scheduled for Saturday April 19th at 9:00AM. Due to the leak on the east end, Bob and couple of volunteers (volunteers needed) will pump the pond down to just below the shelf level on Friday April 18th at 1:00PM. Bob hopes to suck the algae off the bottom while pumping the pond down. On the 19th the leak will then be patched, the lilies repotted and fertilized, and the pond refilled.

Dick described the workshop at the Sacred Hearts Retreat.

Bev Kratzer discussed plans for the plant sale.

Dick covered the events that we have planned for this summer.

Cheri presented the Treasurers Report. We have $205.82 in checking and $2618.12 in savings for total club funds of $2823.95.

Dick invited anyone to attend the next Board Meeting. This is scheduled for April 9th at 6:30PM at Bob Oatman’s house.

Dick presented the boards plan to begin charging any member that wants a paper copy of the newsletter and additional $10 fee. He asked if anyone had an issue with this and no one did. Bob Oatman mentioned that we are adding a link to the PPWGS web page which allows access to the latest newsletter without the need to log in. From the newsletter notification email, you can directly link to the PPWGS website and then the newsletter (no login necessary).

Dick presented an idea of having a 50/50 raffle at the club meetings. The way it works is we will sell raffle tickets during the meeting, then draw a winning ticket. The winner gets 50% of the pot and the club retains the other 50%. About half of the membership expressed an interest and said that they would purchase a ticket.

There was a short discussion on a weed called Myrtle Spurge. This weed is very invasive and poisonous to your fish, other animals, and may irritate your skin. We are working to get an expert from the County to speak on this plant and others.

Tom Taylor revisited some of the upcoming events offering greater detail.
Tom then led a discussion on “Waking up your Plants, Pond and Fish”. Tom discussed several items such as food, plants, cleaning, pumps, filter media, plumbing, chemicals and netting.

Dick then asked if there were any other questions before beginning to draw door prizes.

Tom Taylor offered four 4”-6” Koi and four bags of Sodium Thiosulfate (de-chlor), and the Hales offered two large bags of Mazuri fish food which was divided into smaller bags as door prizes.

Door prize winners were as follows: Linda Burbridge – Wind Chime, Bev Kratzer – Rabbit Statue, Alan Burbidge – Fish Food, Bonny Hale – Net Bags, Rich Gibson – Koi, Dick Williams – Koi, Marty Bunker – Fish Food, Sherry Conroy – Koi, Jack Conroy – Koi, Mary Bucher – Fish Food, Claudine Gibson – Koi, Bob Oatman – Fish Food, Lanell Williams – Fish Food.
